Network Rail said the Cumbrian Coast route had been 'severely damaged', particularly as the torrential rain had caused several landslips.

Both operators will be introducing new routes and trains as part of their contracts, which start in April. Many stations will be improved, and Arriva will be upgrading 43 of the smaller Northern stations by introducing staff.
